Helping support Georgia’s precious native ecosystems
Unruly Roots is based in Sandy Springs, in the northern part of the Atlanta, Georgia metro area. We provide garden consulting services to the greater Atlanta area to help people build kitchen gardens and sustainable landscapes that feed families and native wildlife.
Our three main garden consulting focus areas are:
Growing fresh food to help maximize nutrition and taste, reduce food miles, build resilient local food systems, and minimize food waste.
Supporting biodiversity and nature regeneration including rebuilding soil heath, reducing erosion/runoff, capturing carbon, and providing food and habitat for native pollinators and other wildlife.
Creating beautiful, functional outdoor spaces that align with your individual goals, so you actually want to spend time out in your garden.
Where we call home
Atlanta is part of the Piedmont ecoregion 8.3.4, or more specifically, the Southern Inner Piedmont ecoregion 45b. Our city sits on the traditional homelands of the Muscogee Creek and Cherokee Peoples. The area’s predominant natural features include hills, rivers and creeks, native grasslands, and both evergreen and deciduous forests. Our USDA growing zone has switched between 7b and 8a over the years (currently 8a).
In Sandy Springs we get about 50 inches of rain per year, and we have about a 62% tree canopy cover. In January our average temperatures hover between 36/52 degrees F, and in July they rise to around 72/88 degrees F. Our average last frost date is April 1st, and our average first frost date is Nov 2nd— so we have a wonderfully long growing season!
Unruly Roots has hands-on experience growing in the unique climate conditions of the Atlanta area, and can help you build your dream kitchen garden or sustainable landscape with confidence.
